Standing up for a new wave of artists struggling to elbow their way into the limelight, ‘Brownswood Electr*c’ weaves a path through the electronic landscape in 2010, representing the rainbow spectrum of electronic goodness purveyed by Brownswood’s figurehead Gilles Peterson in his radio playlists and DJ sets. The boundaries between so-called “hip-hop”, “house”, “techno”, “dubstep” and “drum & bass” have never been so blurred, often rendering these signifiers practically obsolete, and indeed it’s at these crossings, junctions and awkward intersections where the most inspiring and stirring sound clashes occur. These are the sounds that we commemorate on ‘Brownswood Electr*c’ – the music that occupies the grey areas… that lives in the spaces inbetween… that falls between the gaps.
Just as we have with our Brownswood Bubblers series, we were determined to showcase material from some fresh faces. KiEnRa provides a dose of undulating, melodic synth-driven flip-flop from Estonia; Hypno contributes an awesome chattering funky-meets-techno jam all the way from Iceland; and Norwegian 2-step maestro Clueless throws up a wickedly bumpy, string-laden garage anthem. Nestling amongst nuggets from hotly tipped talent in the form of devonwho (Fat City/All City), B. Bravo (Frite Nite), Pearson Sound (aka Ramadanman – Hessle Audio fam), Mosca (Nightslugs/Fabric), George Fitzgerald (Hotflush/Doldrums) 16bit (on a deeper flex) and Mount Kimbie (Hotflush), this is a snapshot of a scene in rude health.
Compiled by Alex Stevenson (one third of London-based DJ/producers Patchwork Pirates and assistant to Gilles Peterson) and proudly featuring cover art by KARBORN, the album celebrates the spirit of invention and commitment to experimentation intrinsic to the Worldwide underground in the face of the fusion and hybridity that characterises contemporary sound system culture.
